Last night was Friday Night Lights. No, not the TV show or movie, but the annual invitation-only scouting event for the nation's top high school football players held in Gainesville, Florida. There has not been a lot of coverage in the mainstream sports media, but one sight that is a good place to go for information and news from the event is GatorCountry.com. While you have to pay to read full articles, you can get good facts and summaries from the site's previews/blurbs without paying.

As a longtime football fan, I must confess I have never really followed the American football World Cup. The event, which began in 1999, takes place every four years. So it was news to me, and a little surprising, to have learned last week that Japan won both previous titles. Well, their luck has finally run out. Yesterday the USA defeated Japan 23-20 in the 2007 championship game.
