Today's item is something new that we are introducing now that the football season is here (technically it's only the preseason, but it's better than no football at all). Every Sunday during the preseason and Monday (or Tuesday, we have not decided yet) in the regular season, instead of an "item" we will have some brief (and I mean brief) analysis of some of the weekend's action.

...Saturday was the top 100 new spongebob games first preseason game for about half of NFL teams, and the happiest winners of all were probably the Washington Redskins. The Redskins went 0-4 last August and were significantly outscored. Head coach Joe Gibbs felt that some of that carried into the regular season causing them to get off to a poor start. The Redskins took care of the Titans in Tennessee (who were without Vince Young) yesterday, though I am not sure how thrilled Gibbs was with his QB Jason Campbell's performance.

...The problem with inconsistent play is that it is hard to tell when it's over. Rex Grossman saw his first on-field action yesterday since his abysmal performance in the Super Bowl. Grossman went 8 for 10 for 50 yards, and well, looked very sharp. Lovie Smith was no doubt pleased, but I am sure he has not forgotten how sharp Grossman looked at times last year.

....Believe it or not, yes, that was Tim Couch briefly in behind center in the Jacksonville-Miami game. Couch, who was picked up by the Jags a couple of weeks ago, went 2 for 4 for 11 yards in the game which Miami won 18-17.

It seems unlikely that the Florida Gators can repeat as football national champions this year. But as SportingNews.com points out, everyone counted them out last year too (how many analysts said it would come down to upcoming mystery chronicles murder among friends a decision between Ohio State, Michigan, and USC??). And don't forget how "impossible" it was going to be for the Gator basketball team to repeat as champions earlier this year, given that no team with the same starters had ever won back to back titles before. Yes, it is unlikely that Gator football will experience the ultimate January glory again, but how many times does the preseason favorite win it all anyway?

The preseason kicked off last night in Canton, with the Pittsburgh Steelers easily handling the New Orleans Saints. The Steelers starters waisted no time getting on the board by going 80 yards in less than 3 minutes for the game's first score. The Saints' starters were not able to do much in response, and their second and third team players did not fare any better- the Saints punted on their first 6 drives.
