A quick recap of (some of) this weekend's preseason action...

...The Philadelphia Eagles must have read our Item of the Day from Tuesday as they came out Friday night vs. Carolina looking much better. Did we overreact in our Tuesday assessment? Some may say so, but two preseason performances don't mean a whole lot, and if anything, at this point all we know is Philly can be inconsistent. Our beef on Tuesday was that nothing clicked for the Eagles- not even their first team offense and defense. It was quite a different story on Friday night though.

...The team that dominated the Eagles a week ago did not fare as well earlier today vs. the New York Giants, losing by a point. Giants QB Eli Manning played nicely, going 10 for 13 with a touchdown. The Giants' running game also did some damage, with 5 runners averaging over 4 yards a carry (and a 6th, Brandon Jacobs, just under than mark). It was not all roses for NY though, they had several injuries including a season-ending one to WR Michael Jennings.

...Brady Quinn had an impressive debut with Cleveland, going 13 for 20 for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns (and three of those incompletions were spikes to stop the clock). Though the Browns lost the game by 3, you can't blame Quinn. When he entered the game with just 9:20 remaining, the Browns trailed 23-7.

Today's item is NFL.com. Now why would we profile this web site which most football fans already know about and have probably visited a number of times before? It's because the site has a new look, and it ain't just cosmetic. The new NFL.com demonstrates that they understand what online users want. We'll let you check out some of the changes for yourself, but one notable change is their continued and increased integration of NFL Network programming. NFL.com has offered video before, but there wasn't much of a selection, and what was available was generally short and of relatively low quality. I love the 24 X 7 analysis offered by the NFL Network (and especially their numerous repeats of preseason action so I can TiVo a number of games and fast forward to see the action I want), but the new NFL.com website gives me the added ability to browse through all sorts of videos, many of them somewhat lengthy, so I can get the analysis I want, exactly when I want it, without having to TiVo daily programs (wow, now I'm too lazy to use TiVo, never would have seen that coming!).

Fox announced its new broadcasting lineup for the coming football season. Some notable changes:

-Barry Switzer will be joining the FOX NFL Sunday pregame show, where he will go head to head vs. Jimmy Johnson in a segment called "Coaches Corner"
-Jay Glazer will no longer be a sideline reporter and instead will be in the studio with everyone else (sounds like a crowded house to me)
-Weather girl er..I mean weather person Jillian Barberie is returning

For today's item we go to video...I'll resist the temptation to (lamely) describe this highlight with the phrase "now that's using your head".

Today's item is a top 100 mystery chronicles murder among friends quick reaction to new spongebob games for kids last nights Philadelphia-Baltimore game from your's truly. I wrote over the weekend that the Washington Redskins were no doubt happy to have gotten a win after an 0-4 preseason last year left head coach Joe Gibbs feeling that the beatings they took carried over into the regular season. Well, Washington's division rival may want to remember this all in the coming weeks, after they took what can only be described as a "horse whipping" from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. Sure it's just the preseason, but the Philadelphia Eagles' performance in Baltimore was more than just a loss to build on, it was a reminder of the struggles and inconsistency the team has faced since going to the Super Bowl in 2005. Case in point, after allegedly "upgrading" their running game in the offseason, the Eagles leading rusher on Monday was QB AJ Feely, who amassed 8 yards on 1 carry. The second leading rusher was QB Kevin Kolb who managed to pick up 4 yards on 2 carries. Popular rookie Tony Hunt? He ended with a goose egg in yardage despite 5 attempts. Baltimore meanwhile shredded Philly's 1st team D for a touchdown on the opening drive and never looked back. Two teams going in opposite directions? Way, way, way too early to tell. But the Eagles would do well to learn what the Redskins have over the years. Performing well in the preseason does not mean a whole lot., but performing terribly can become a pattern that seeps its way into the regular season.
